As someone pointed out in another thread, the Toyota 3.5 V6 in the Sienna achieves better real gas mileage with only VVT, check out for example. Perhaps it needs to time to get the kinks worked out, but IMHO, its not a good direction to take. I expect a smooth and sleek powertrain from Honda, am severely disappointed in my 3.5 i-VTEC, does not feel like a Honda, and the gain over the VTEC it leaves behind is nominal at best. In this gen3, Honda drops its real VTEC, puts in cylinder management instead, and doesn't get much out of it, save a lot of complaints. I am sure there are other luxury brands using it in one form or another. For example, Lexus uses Active Control Engine Mount in its vehicles for smoothness. I have two of those at home.Īctive Engine Mount: It is not a VCM exclusive thing either. This is the same idea that has proliferated in the form of noise canceling headsets from Bose and others. Hence the phrase, "firing on all cylinders."Īctive Noise Cancellation: Basically a speaker system that emits completely out of phase sound to negate certain noise frequencies.

Noise cancellation software & active engine mounts, ugh! This indicates to me that there might not be any difference between the two versions in Odyssey.Īs far as gearing goes, the difference is only in the fifth gear (which is shorter w/VCM). And with VCM, the torque peak is slightly earlier. In Odyssey, it is tuned for only 240 lb-ft (without VCM) and 242 lb-ft (with VCM). In Accord, the J35 is tuned for 248 lb-ft (with or without VCM). Unlike the Accord, Honda has not tried to match peak numbers with/without VCM. Im a bit dissapointed in Honda being the technical/mechanical masters they are not being able to avoid the performance loss while employing the VCM. I think Honda could have adopted a 6AT and could have avoided the VCM all together. I for one would certainly take the hit in gas milage over a loss of 30lbft of torque in the midrange.

I would just call it an update to the system, not an improvement.people will laugh at that. Not sure what Honda is trying to do with this in the Odyssey. The Accord's VCM is worth talking about and will help sell more V6's as it's fuel economy is almost the same as a 4cylinder '07 model. In the '08 Accord, there IS an improvement in mpg AND in power. This is better but not enough to categorize it as an improvement, especially with a loss in hp. The '05-'07 VCM only gave a 1mpg (CDN) advantage over non-VCM engines in the Odyssey. This is not an 'improvement' if you ask me. If you notice, Honda didn't try to match the peak power in this case (the non-VCM trims are rated slightly higher). Im wondering if this "improved" system in the Odyssey has the same lack of midrange torque as the VCM equipped V6 Accord?
